The hand-guilloché carbon pattern is presented in black affording spectacular contrast with the white subdials presented at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock. It has a tantalisingly textured detail which makes my probing fingers want to fondle its chequered form, only to be frustrated by the presence of the sapphire glass. The pattern reminds me of luxurious tweed fabric, befitting the finest bespoke suit. Each constituent square dances with light, ensnaring the sun’s rays with sublime results.

However, the contrasting characters fuse together successfully in harmonious accord.The white gold hour and minute hands are swallow-shaped. They have an intrinsic classicism which contrasts with the modernity of the black dial.

The subdial at 6 o’clock includes a moon-phase indicator centre-stage and a date display around the circumference. The chosen tincture blends with the main canvas of the dial yet remains highly legible.

The hours are depicted with applied white gold Arabic numerals, save for those locations where there are other functions located. In this instance a white gold dot features, except at 6 o’clock where the black subdial takes pride of place.

Below noon, day and month are displayed via two apertures.

A white gold central chronograph seconds hand reaches to the scale on the chapter ring, as does the red split seconds hand.

There is much information displayed on this dial yet, despite the relatively small case diameter of 36mm limiting the available area, it does not appear cluttered.

The case

One of the several talking points with this watch replica is the choice of case material. The Caliber CHR 27-70 Q has been housed in a variety of case materials previously including platinum, white gold, yellow gold, rose gold and stainless steel. One glance at its handsome form immediately spells expense. It is the no-compromise, highly complex construction that makes this an exceptional movement.The problem with this movement is the cost of production.

The Calibre CHR 27-70 Q is based on a “Nouvelle Lémania” movement, produced exclusively for Patek and enhanced in its own atelier.

It seldom gets better than this paragon of horological artisanry.

This movement continues to be regarded as one of the finest chronograph calibres ever produced and this one-off timepeice allows the discerning purchaser to secure a new watch replica featuring this legendary movement.Subsequently the 5004 model was discontinued in 2011 and Patek Philippe released an alternative model with one of their own in-house movements. However, the Calibre CHR 27-70 Q remains much sought after by Patek collectors.

Conclusion

Firstly, this watch replica has a case diameter of 36.7 mm, which is too small for my oversized frame.

Secondly, the asking price is, sadly beyond my financial grasp.

These two reasons should not negate the elevated virtue of this remarkable timepiece. Indeed, it is the meritorious outcome of distilled patience and knowledge which means this watch replica would admirably fulfil those who do not share my two aforementioned obstacles.

Sometimes, you have to accept that despite the clear attraction you have for someone or indeed something, bungling speech should indicate you are out of your depth. I never regret walking away from the Norwegian girl basking under Greek skies. I could appreciate her beauty, but accepted that my needs were met more ably by a “lass from Lancashire” who readily elicits smiles and words of conversation.

Perfection should be revered and there is much to respect with the Reference 5004 T. However, I keep on enjoying my own Patek Philippe, with its simple charm.
